Hojo Masako was the most powerful of all women in the medieval ages in Japan. She was called the “Nun Shogun” and her husband was the first Shogun, Minamoto Yoritomo who established the Kamakura Shogunate.

Abbess Kakusan founded Tokeiji as a convent in 1285 for the use as a sanctuary for women in distress. In the Sengoku Era, Toyotomi Hideyori’s daughter, Naahime, escaped death at Osaka Castle to the safety of this sanctuary and became Abbess Tenshu.
